An Idea Born

Established in 1989 as Primary Times in the UK by Vicky Ambrose.  Already very experienced in the publishing industry, Vicky - after having her daughter - saw a need for parents to be better informed on issues affecting families in her local area.  After many happy and successful years of publishing Primary Times and franchising it throughout the UK, and with her daughter grown up, decided to sell Primary Times and start a new and exciting life in southern Spain.

Once again Vicky saw a real need for parents to be better informed in Spain and Kids on the Costa SL was born in March 2002.  With the KOTC brand being very well established and recognised, it is still as of this day the only printed and digital ‘what’s on and information' publication targeting English speaking parents and guardians from across the globe with children and teens aged 0 - 18 years, living in and visiting the popular and very family friendly towns and cities in southern Spain (mainly Malaga, Costa del Sol, neighbouring inland areas, and Gibraltar).

All Change

After 30 successful years in publishing - 13 of those years with KOTC building strong foundations and relationships with parents, businesses and local government in southern Spain, as well as ensuring its value and trust in the community - in May 2015, it was time for Vicky to take a well deserved rest and enjoy her future retirement years, and for a new parent - who was equally as passionate - to ensure the legacy of KOTC and to look to the future to ensure its continued success and growth in an ever changing world.

Lynne Duncan, a parent of two teenage children with a passion to make a 'real' difference to families and local communities, took over as publisher and editor of KOTC in May 2015 with drive, purpose and vision for helping families, businesses and communities.

New Direction

From 2002 until 2015 our magazines were published 5 times a year for families with children aged up to 14 years and reached 30,000 families offline, but with the demand from families with children in their growing teenage years too, as well as covering a wider variety of topics, and the increase in parents looking to access information online we are now, since 2016, meeting these needs in multiple ways:

In May 2016 we launched our hugely successful and higher quality handy sized annual publication in both print and digital format entitled "The Family Guide for Southern Spain" which enabled us to:

  • reach 40,000+ families (offline and online),

  • partner with lots more family friendly businesses enabling them to reach even more families

  • reach Spanish speaking families as we introduce some sections in Spanish)

  • assist more local charities and community projects with their marketing in our publication free of charge

  • cover a much larger range of topics affecting families living here

  • help families that vacation here to make the most out of their holiday.

When designing this publication, it was important to give it a fresh, modern, eye catching and easy to use navigational layout whilst keeping the popular categories, updating some of them, and introducing new ones.  Our launch edition covered areas such as:

  • What's On and Family Fun Guides for parents and children with dated listings covering the whole period of the magazine

  • Special Features for parents raising children in Spain

  • Pregnancy, baby and toddler advice

  • Mother and Toddler groups

  • After School and Holiday Activities and Summer Camps

  • 'Teen' Building and Activities for 13-18

  • Party places and ideas

  • Education in general and specific to living in Spain

  • Health, Wellbeing & Fitness

  • Issues affecting local communities, including charities and good causes

  • plus more to come in our 2017 annual publication such as: Pets n Vets, Jobs, Careers and Volunteering, Youth Focus, and Faith and Beliefs

With the larger and higher quality annual publication now taking centre stage we felt it was important to end the year with a very special festive edition to cover Christmas and New Year events, activities and celebrations and in November 2016 saw the launch of our new look Festive Edition for Families.

In preparation for an exciting year ahead in 2017, we introduced our new look KOTC Logo!

Our fun and vibrant new logo reflects the many different cultures from families from all over the world that are living and holidaying in southern Spain and how active, positive and happy "kids on the costa" are in this warm, friendly, dynamic and multicultural part of the world.

December 2016 saw the beginning of an exciting partnership with Marbella Lifestyle as each month KOTC will feature on their radio program to discuss issues affecting families on the coast in a fun, positive and practical way.

More and more of our readers are signing up for our Newsletter which we officially launched in January 2017 and enables us to keep them fully informed on a variety of developments for families and and also KOTC improvements and changes, as well as giving our clients an additional way to reach our audience.

March 2017 saw the launch of our new highly visual and interactive website that is easier to read, navigate, follow, and the introduction of our Blog and Parents Forum, plus other exciting new elements.

Towards the end of 2018 KOTC will be launching our very own Social Network for Families to help parents, kids, teenagers -and grandparents too - to connect with other families in southern Spain helping them to make friends, create groups of their own interests, and network with like-minded people in a safe, fun and educational way.

The Basis of Our Success

Although in 2017 we are now entering our 15th year, which is an incredible achievement for a niche publication, our story is really just beginning.  We have sowed our seeds to grow on a basis of trust, love, faith, truth, gratitude, loyalty, courage and hard work.  With these solid foundations being laid and with each word, each connection, each issue, and our undeniable passion to be a blessing to families in so many ways, as well as actively partnering with local, national and international businesses and charities, churches, community projects and local government projects, we lovingly nurture each one so that every issue will be an example and stepping stone to the next, forever growing and bearing good fruit that has value, meaning and purpose.

“Blessed is the man who trusts in the Lord, and whose hope is the Lord. For he shall be like a tree planted by the waters, which spreads out its roots by the river, and will not fear when heat comes; but its leaf will be green, and will not be anxious in the year of drought, nor will cease from yielding fruit” (Jeremiah 17:7-8)

How do we do this?  Through Trusting God, enabling him to take the lead in all that we do, and giving Him the Glory for our success. "Thank you Lord."
