Back to School Misery or Delight After Summer Break?

September 2, 2017

With almost three months off school during the summer holidays here in southern Spain, some kids will be keen to get back to school now after struggling to keep themselves happy and occupied for so long whilst other kids will find it harder to get out of the way of that "holiday feeling", especially when the sun is still shining until 8pm in the evenings, having more freedom, and the added bonus of living in a tourist/holiday location with lots to do that lasts all year round!

As a parent, it can be difficult to get back to normal too but it will help if, as a family, you discuss and agree a plan to establish some pre-school routines to prepare your child or teen for the challenges of the new term ahead. If they are old enough to understand, discuss with them their likes and/or concerns about school - and if appropriate - addressing them right from the beginning with their new teacher(s) so they are fully aware and prepared too.

Take a look at our recommended "101 fantastic Back to School Tips and Advice" from

Autumn  term on the Costa del Sol sees many families coming over from countries all over the world to settle in areas such as Marbella, Estepona, Mijas, Alhaurin el Grande, Benalmadena, Sotogrande, Malaga City and Gibraltar to begin a new life.  For other families already living here it may also be a new school change and making new friends. For many children this can exciting - an adventure even - but for others it can be an anxious time. Each child is unique and deals with changes/new circumstances in different ways and it's very important to listen to your child's needs and feelings whilst reassuring them and giving them a boost of confidence to embrace what lies ahead of them knowing that they are loved, supported and safe no matter what challenges they face at school.

Here in the beautiful and multicultural part of Andalucia region of Spain we are very blessed to benefit from both public schools and a variety of international schools that cater to different educational, vocational, cultural and developmental needs that parents and children can choose from at varying costs to suit their budget.

Whilst many of the private international schools are excellent and have different strengths, Kids on the Costa is proud to partner with three that we highly recommend to parents living in and around the Mijas, Marbella and Sotogrande areas that cater to both the educational and emotional needs of children and teenagers aged from 3 to 18 years. They create positive learning environments where each child is an individual, feels safe and is best able to learn and grow.
