On Thursday 25 January Kids on the Costa were very proud to co host with inspirational children's author, Anna McKann and RTV Marbella LifeStyle's Emma de Acedo, an exciting and unique event at Tomate Café Bar in Marbella for children aged 9 to 13 who were the finalists in our 2017 Creative Writing Competition, which is part of our #inspiringcostakids campaign to get children and teens of all ages to try something new that inspires them, that they can learn from, and in turn are able to inspire others. A tall order...I know!
The Creative Writing Competition was brilliantly thought out and prepared by Anna who is already inspiring children with her many books and has attended over 200 schools in the UK delivering creative writing workshops.. with more to come in schools here in southern Spain.
Children's Author Anna McKann eagerly anticipating the arrival of the finalists!
The children, parents and teachers were all very proud and excited to be attending where the finalists were all awarded with prizes sponsored by Kids on the Costa, Sharon House Publishing and RTV Marbella LifeStyle; that included an iPad, Kindle Fire HD10, trendy backpack, a range of fun and unique stationery gifts as well as vouchers donated by Bookworld in Puerto Banus.
All attendees were kept in suspense right until the very end as to who had won what! This was very exciting for the kids, parents, teachers ...and us too!
Guests started to arrive from 5pm with all the children, and some parents and teachers then being interviewed on RTV Marbella (next door to the event) from 5.30-6.30 by Emma with myself and Anna being guest interviewers (we loved that!). The children were stars and took it all in their stride reciting parts of their creative writing stories, talking about what they love to do and how they got the idea for their plot. Very revealing and great to hear what kids today of different age groups enjoy doing!

Even though the children were each given a choice of two lead paragraphs to choose from (taken from Anna McKann's Chavos novel), each story was unique and very creative with some even taking the time to prepare an illustrative front cover to go with it. Nine year old Aitor drew a fantastic picture of his Spy character!

We were delighted to learn at the event from Aitor's mum that he had entered our Creative Writing Competition so that he could improve his English. What a great idea, and not only did Aitor accomplish this but did so well that he won a prize!
Prior to the prize giving event, Emma de Acedo interviewed the guests for TV network M95, and professional photographer Bianca de Vilar captured the event as it unfolded with some fantastic photos for everyone to treasure.
Anna invited each excited - if not a little nervous - finalist up to present them with their winning certificates along with some very constructive feedback on what made their stories stand out from the rest. I was then delighted to award them with their well deserved prize (and a hug of course!)
And the winners are ....

Gabriel Hampton Blackadder from Novaschool Sunland International, Cártama
Aitor Macias Lopez from Swans International, Marbella

Overall the event was a huge success (a very special thank you to English teacher Valerie Yellow for helping on the day and making all the guests feel so welcome! :-)) The feedback from the children, parents and teachers showed us that there has not been an event like this for children on the coast and they are very excited for this year's competition where they will be lending their support and inspiring as many friends and pupils as possible to participate.
We can't wait to read all the creative writing stories from children this year - which has been opened up to the whole of Andalucia as we want as many children as possible to have the opportunity to be “inspired to write anywhere, anytime!”
We'd like to thank David Howarth, English teacher from English International College for inspiring his pupils to write creatively and to take part in the competition, and all the parents that encouraged their children to participate.
It was wonderful to receive enthusiastic feedback from Ken Spencer, Head of Primary, at Novaschool Sunland International about what Kids on the Costa are doing to inspire kids and teens on the Costa del Sol, and to receive an invitation to visit the school and see first hand how children are being inspired to learn through their various events. Look forward to reporting on this soon!

A huge thank you to all the children who entered our 2017 competition. Each and every one of you inspired us and we hope that even though we were unable to award everyone with a prize that it won't put you off from entering again or encouraging your friends to enter too. It's great fun whilst learning too!
If you would to get involved in our #inspiringcostakids campaign whether it be as a sponsor, organiser or fundraiser volunteer, or have an idea on how to inspire kids and teens in other ways and would like our help, please get in touch...we'd love to hear from you!
Please take a moment to comment/give feedback below... and we'd love if you could also share this and spread the news to other parents and teachers, potential sponsors and volunteers who you feel would like to learn of our #inspiringcostakids campaign and Creative Writing Competitions.
(We'll be uploading the winners' stories, radio interviews and tv footage here very soon. Sign up for our Newsletter to be notified)
